The idea behind this visually stimulating commercial for
US TV was to demonstrate the sleekness, beauty and technological
supremacy of the Acura by comparing it to clumsy,
low-tech, pixellated surroundings. The car cuts through an
urban city-scape, scattering pixels as it goes. The juxtaposition
of the smooth lines of the car and the hard edges of the squares
proves to be a fascinating, original aesthetic technique.
Tim Hope approached Glassworks to discuss post production
techniques. Initially the ad was shot on 35mm, then graded
to HD D5 for an HD delivery.
Numerous tests were carried out to see which would give him
the effect he desired. It was decided that a mixture of 2D
and 3D pixellation would be the best approach. Pete Reilly
in Glasswork's research and development department wrote a
bespoke code for Maya that would create and animate 3D pixels.
In order for this to work, the background geometry had to
be built and the buildings camera projected in 3D. Finally
the 3D elements were combined with the 2D pixellation in Flame.
Each shot was painstakingly layered and graded until Tim was
happy with the look. The result is a beautifully crafted commercial.
