A platform of unsuspecting rail passengers are overcome
with both joy and balloons in this fun spot for the Orange
Canary and Dolphin packages. An average day begins, for
commuters and casual travellers alike, when their train
pulls into station and they gather around the doors. As
the doors open however, a deluge of colourful balloon animals
in the shape of the various packages on offer burst out
and swirl over and amongst our enthralled travellers. There
are a variety of reactions, from astonished amusement to
joyous spontaneity, with people batting, bouncing, chasing
… and eventually choosing the balloons.
The limitations of 'directing' physical nylon balloons
on set meant that a substantial amount of balloons required
in a given shot (sometimes all of the balloons in a shot)
needed to be created in CG. A vast amount of work was channelled
into replicating the very specific and complex look of the
orange animals, the way they react with the changing light
conditions in such a huge space, and the cumulative effect
that they have on each other. Animating the animals posed
another challenge, as the physical balloons shot on set
were heavy without helium and didn't move in the light 'care-free'
fashion favoured by the director and creative team.
Extensive cleanup was required to nearly all of the back-plates
to allow the balloons to appear as though they are moving
in amongst the commuters, as well as to remove pieces of
physical kit used in the suspension of the physical balloons.
Duncan Malcolm put in long hours integrating and compositing
the 3d balloons into the live-action footage.
