In 2001 Glassworks Special Projects were asked to design and create a state of the art race car simulator for Orange, based on the Orange-Arrows AX3. After some research and development, Glassworks proposed a virtual reality simulator, utilising the latest in PC processors, fast disk arrays, head trackers, stereo-glasses and graphics cards.
Unimpressed by previous attempts to create VR arcade games and other virtual environments due to poor graphics, slow head-tracking and low resolution, Special Projects decided to start from scratch. By applying Glassworks wealth of knowledge and experience in creating realistic images, Special Projects were able to deliver ground-breaking advances in Virtual Reality.

Working closely with Nikon UK we developed fast transfer software that enabled a Nikon D1X digital camera with 6mm lens to capture every meter of Magny-Cours racetrack at about 3k x 2k pixel resolution; this was combined with telemetry data from a hot lap by Jos Verstappen.
At the 2002 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, Orange launched the VRE (Virtual Reality Experience). During the 2002 F1 season, over 250,000 people tried the VRE.This unique Virtual Reality system was invented, designed and programmed by Glassworks Special Projects.
