With a fat hairy monster dribbling on your hair, a mischievous baby ‘porcu-thing’ snapping it, and a creepy creature flattening it, Sunsilk has taken a brave step in deviating from the standard cheesy science and vacuous model combo of more traditional shampoo ads. It also gave Glassworks another chance to exercise their award winning CG character animation and hair skills. Working from character design drawings from Star Wars character artist Sang Jun Lee under the direction of Rory Kelleher, of production company Independent, Glassworks 3d team worked painstakingly for a number of weeks getting the characters just right.
Shoot attendance in deepest Brussels yielded the necessary camera tracking and lighting reference and working with prop master/puppeteer, Jean-Pierre Grandet of Honda Accord Cog fame, provided the basis for the realistic interaction between the creatures and the actress’ real hair. Far from the usual taming of animator’s excesses the director was clamouring for more dribble and creepy behaviour from the characters. It was simply great fun.
