Directed by Neil Harris at Stink for DDB London, these
idents offer a humorous take on the benefits of Volkswagen's
family saloon.
Each ident uses a real life scenario to demonstrate one
of many features of the Passat, each with an impossible
twist.
In "Baby", a toddler runs at warp speed on an uphill baby
walker. "Poodle", as it's name suggests, features large
fluffy canines of the Patagonian variety, whose botty pom
poms flash, hazard-light style as warning to a cat that
inadvisably crosses their path. A gymnast holds herself
at an impossible angle on the high beam in "Auto Hold" and
in "Snail", our mobile-home clad invertebrate beams light
from his antennae, emulating the ingenious headlamps on
the car.
Although a great deal of effects work does not seem evident
in the spots, the post production process was complex and
lengthy. Intricate compositing and rotoscoping had to be
applied to each piece and particular attention had to be
paid to animating the gymnast and creating the look of the
rapidly racing baby's legs.
